Snowy Owl in Tree - Salisbury Beach State Reservation, Massachusetts
Upon encountering this snowy owl, I was shocked by its willingness to come so close to a group of humans. Of course, the owls we find in Massachusetts are usually immature juveniles who are learning how to hunt in an environment much more forgiving than the arctic. We stood still near this tree for about an hour as the owl came and went in front of us. On a few occasions, it dove into the dunes to capture a vole. It was the first time I'd seen a snowy owl, and what a great experience it was!
